How California wildfires can impact water availability

Image
How California wildfires can impact water availability : A new study by scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) uses a numerical model of an important watershed in California to shed light on how wildfires can affect large-scale hydrological processes, such as stream flow, groundwater levels, and snowpack and snowmelt. The team found that post-wildfire conditions resulted in greater winter snowpack and subsequently greater summer runoff as well as increased groundwater storage. First report of superconductivity in a nickel oxide material

Image
First report of superconductivity in a nickel oxide material : Scientists at SLAC and Stanford have made the first nickel oxide material that shows clear signs of superconductivity - the ability to transmit electrical current with no loss. The first in a potential new family of unconventional superconductors, its similarity to the cuprates raises hopes that it can be made to superconduct at relatively high temperatures. But it's also different in key ways that could overturn theories of how these puzzling materials work. Visualizing the interconnections among climate risks : Climate change affects multiple sectors in virtually every part of the world. Impacts on one sector may influence other sectors, which we call 'interconnections of climate risks'. Our easy-to-understand risk maps and flowcharts show how changes in climate impact natural and socio-economic systems, ultimately affecting human security, health, and well-being. Our methodology can be used as a communication tool to inform decision makers, stakeholders, and the public about the cascading risks triggered by climate change.
